Residents will march through the CBD to protest the Queensland Government’s handling of environmental areas across the south-east region this Sunday.
Colleen Niland, a spokesperson from rally organiser Save Our Legacy, said: “The goal is to show our decision-makers we can see a SEQ region-wide pattern that is disenfranchising us and our children environmentally, economically and politically.”
Save Our Legacy, a group advocating for environment and liveability within the region, will rally alongside multiple community groups including Save Victoria Park, Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance and Games Watchdog 2032.
Ms Niland said the march will go from King George Square to Queens Park to protest a number of issues, such as “the destruction of valuable greenspace for development across our region including in and near to protected areas”.
“The commercialisation and/or sale of public land, the lack of transparency and accountability around these and other consequential decisions being made by this government.
“Excessive spending on new Olympics venues during a cost-of-living crisis when renovations to existing venues will suffice,” she said.
The community groups are calling on local residents and families to march with them on Sunday, when Murray Watt, Federal Minister for Environment and Water, is expected to be in Brisbane.
“We need to stand together to create one voice for a future better than this,” Ms Niland said.
“It’s a peaceful march. Safe and proactive.
“We want as many people there as possible,” she said.
