Death dances through everyone’s mind at some stage of life.
You might have done the nightclub shuffle with death during a misadventure in a Valley nightclub.
Death and loss may waltz through your mind when you had to end a friendship that was leading you astray.
Life is full of big and little deaths, but this Gold Coast dance theatre company has the remedy for your aching heart.
The Farm will be premiering their show No One Gets Out of Here Alive at Brisbane Festival this year.
The contemporary performance invites audiences to explore every facet of death, from deaths of loved ones to the little deaths of hopes and dreams.
For dancer in No One Gets Out of Here Alive, Kai Taberner, being a part of this show has recontextualised his perspective of those little deaths.
Taberner said, “instead of just viewing it as necessarily something sad or… having this remorse or sorrow about it,” he accepts that these are experiences that have “died in a way”.
Taberner approaches death as an inevitable part of life.
“If we aren’t able to die then are we truly living?”
“Death in itself is not a taboo subject because it is just something that is real and something that will always happen,” Taberner said.
Taberner has developed a very personal relationship with the performance as a result of the Farm’s unique creative process.
“[The Farm] is very collaborative. And so, the input of everyone involved in the creative process is valuable and important,” Taberner said.
“…But we also want this show to be a celebration of life… it also addresses the transcendent feeling of how precious life can be,” Webber said.
The Farm’s collaborative approach is what drew Taberner to move back to Brisbane after several years working with the Sydney Dance Company.
Taberner says it’s “a type of show that everyone should see”.
No One Gets Out of Here Alive will be on show at the Thomas Dixon Centre from September 9 – 12.
