A Brisbane City Council employee has been endorsed by the LNP for the seat of McConnel ahead of the October State Election.
Christien Duffey’s (pictured) career has focused on transport infrastructure, economic policy and housing supply as Manager of Business Services for Brisbane City Council.
Mr Duffey said he is proud to call the growing electorate of McConnel home.
“McConnel holds a special place in Queensland – our electorate forms the vibrant heart of the City of Brisbane. It’s a diverse, dynamic, and aspirational community that I am deeply proud to call home,” he said.
“Our community’s diversity is its strength. As a proud gay man, I am deeply committed to the inclusion and celebration of all backgrounds, cultures and identities.
“The community has undergone significant growth and urban renewal over the past two decades. The fact that our population has nearly tripled in the last 20 years, reflects the attractiveness of our community as a place to live, work and thrive.”
However, Mr Duffey acknowledged the community is facing a difficult time with rising costs and other challenges.
“Speaking to locals, they tell me how they are suffering from housing shortages, rising costs, health wait times, worsening traffic and rampant crime,” he said.
“As a resident, I have experienced firsthand the impact of this crime wave, having been broken into and had my car stolen.
“Under the Palaszczuk-Miles Labor Government we’ve witnessed an alarming increase in unlawful activities, theft, and violence… A top priority for the LNP is restoring safety to their neighbourhood.”
Mr Duffey is a recent first homeowner in Spring Hill, and said he understands the struggles young people face in securing their futures.
“Sadly, so many young people I speak to have given up on the dream of owning their own home. It is now about the struggle of keeping a roof over their heads,” he said.
“I believe every member of our community deserves access to secure and affordable housing. Our community faces unique challenges, with 63 per cent of private dwellings rented, far exceeding the state average of 32 per cent.”
Mr Duffey hopes to use his nine years’ experience at the council to serve the community.
“That’s why I’m proud that my career as Manager of Business Services for Brisbane City Council has been dedicated to delivering real outcomes in infrastructure, cost of living and housing supply.
“I know what good government looks like – and am ready to build on this experience and serve our community as part of an LNP government that puts people before politics.
“Over the coming months, I look forward to listening to locals and working with David Crisafulli and the LNP team to bring fresh energy to our community,” he said.
Residents and businesses can email Mr Duffey at McConnel@lnp.org.au if they would like to discuss their priorities and local issues heading into the October state election.
