With the annual Herb Awareness Festival on the horizon, the Queensland Herb Society looks forward to celebrating its 51-year history as a grassroots gardening community.
Hosted at the Albion Peace Centre on May 31, this free festival has stalls and workshops for any gardeners to enjoy.
The Queensland Herb Society was founded in 1975 by Josie Russle as a small group of enthusiasts and has since grown to over 170 members.
With strong focus on its community origins, the society embodies its motto “learning by sharing” with members taking turns to educate each other through discussions, workshops, and classes.
They remain very close knit with President Debbie Aitcheson describing the community warmly.
“The members that we have are just gorgeous. We’re like a big family, so it’s very special,” she said.
Ms Aitcheson joined the society in 1999 and has been helping run the Herb Awareness Festival for 20 years.
She also helps run the monthly workshops, which she says are one of her favourite parts of the society, teaching gardening skills and herb related knowhow.
This year, the Herb Awareness Festival is running from 9am – 3pm on May 31 and is free to attend.
