Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) staff have brought back an old fundraising favourite for hospital staff in Brisbane – the interhospital swimming carnival.
The RBWH Hepatopancreaticobiliary (liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile duct surgery) team are hosting the carnival at the Centenary Aquatic Centre on Friday November 22.
Family, friends, community members and swim squads are also encouraged to swim for a hospital of their choice, and the public are welcome to attend.
Funds raised will go towards pancreatic cancer early detection research and support for patients and loved ones, through charity Pankind.
The RBWH team go above and beyond, undertaking extra research, running bake stalls, and organising the carnival, all on top of their usual workload.
RBWH Pancreatic Cancer Research Coordinator and Nurse Alexa Chadwick said: “Let’s just say I am a sucker for punishment, but we will do absolutely anything that we can for the benefit of our patients and the hard-working teams at the hospitals.”
“[Colleague Dr William McGahan’s] research is just the tip of the iceberg, with the exciting new breakthroughs that are coming out for pancreatic cancer or cancer in general, but we definitely need the support of the community to help us improve quality of life for these patients and their families,” Ms Chadwick said.
