When it comes to social touch football, it’s no coincidence that Glen Gracie’s initials are GG because he always wants a good game.
Mr Gracie said: “We don’t have a name, we’re a simple team who just love to keep fit, social and like having two markers in the week to help us know what day it is!”
The group has enough players for two teams, which face off every Tuesday at Rasey Park and Friday at Ballymore Stadium from 6-7am.
“Our numbers dwindle a bit in winter when the mornings are dark, but the early mornings aren’t usually a problem because we’re rewarded with a ripper breakfast and coffee from Merlo’s in Bowen Hills after,” Mr Gracie said.
The group will turn thirty next year, having formed in 1995 at New Farm Park.
“Another guy and I were throwing a ball around and we’d recruit people walking by, and eventually we got enough for a whole team,” he said.
“[Group member] Danny Tye had another group at the Broncos training ground as well, and we merged to become what we are today.
“Something really special about us is that we’re a pretty intergenerational group. Danny Tye over there is the oldest at 79, but we also have children and grandchildren playing with us. The youngest we’d accept is probably 13.
“Anyone can join, but the only rule is we have a no dickheads policy,” Mr Gracie said.
