Newstead to become pooch paradise at Paw-ty in the Park

Every dog has its day, and this year that day is August 24, when Newstead dog festival Village Voice Paw-ty in the Park will return for its second year to celebrate International Dogs’ Day.

The event will feature entertainment and treats for dogs as well as for their diligent owners, with live music, children’s activities, market stalls, food trucks, and more.

Event Founder Suzanne Guastini said: “The purpose of this event is to link together and deepen community connections, raise awareness of a brilliant charity, educate people about dog health and ownership, and for dogs and dog owners to have fun.”

The event will raise money for Empower Assistance Dogs, a charity which leads the way in training assistance dogs for people with a disability, mental health clients, and therapy dogs for schools and aged care homes.

Event sponsor Newstead Vets will be conducting free dental check-ups, and people can ask about any other dog health concerns.

Put your furry friend through their paces in the dog agility course run by event supporters Total Fusion gym and their dog grooming / daycare centre Bowie.

Once they have worn themselves out on the special dog treadmills, bring your yoga mat so you and your little mate can do the downward dog at the dog yoga session.

Keep an ear out for the MC who will be announcing times for the puparazzi parade – your dog can strut their stuff and show off their pawsonality on the red carpet for the chance to win a prize.

If you have a naughty puppy, make sure to bring them to the dog school workshop, run by Top Dog Pawformance.

Local coffee roasters Fonzie Abbott will be brewing up some dog puppuccinos and there will also be toasties and ice-cream for both dogs and their owners.

To educate you on all your pet needs will be Pets Unleashed, a Brisbane pet store operating under the umbrella of festival sponsor Just For Pets.

Find out about adoption programs through Animal Welfare League on the day, and there will be many other pet stalls to peruse.

The winner of the Village Voice Dog Photography Competition will also be announced on the day – the prize is a personalised pet portrait by artist Karen Kua.

Ms Kua runs the funky, pet-friendly gift store Outside the Box, which sells art, homewares, and clothing as well as gourmet pet treats.

Hamilton Ward Councillor Julia Dixon and Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard said they are thrilled to support the event through the Lord Mayor’s Community Fund.

Village Voice Paw-ty in the Park will be held Saturday, August 24, from 10am – 12:30pm at Waterfront Park in Newstead.
