Northshore developments to address housing shortage

By Darcy Milfull

201 social and affordable homes are planned for Northshore Hamilton, to be delivered by community housing provider Brisbane Housing Company.

Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace said the development at the 8,000m2 site will help “unlock more housing supply”, with works to start in mid-2025.

“Every Queenslander deserves a safe, secure, and affordable place to call home,” she said.

“I can tell you that there’s a lot of demand for social and affordable housing in the Northshore area, and that’s exactly what we will deliver.”

The project forms part of a wider market housing development to provide approximately 1,300 homes in the precinct, which the state government is supporting with a $180 million investment in the construction of a major roads project.

The Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program, enabled by Economic Development Queensland, commenced works on MacArthur Avenue in August.

The program includes several new roads in the Northshore precinct and significant enhancements to existing roads, such as the creation of a sub-tropical boulevard along MacArthur Avenue.

The tree-lined boulevard will feature separated cycleways, footpaths and landscaping – including native plants.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles said that these early works will deliver a “better, more connected Brisbane”.

“Northshore will become home to Team Australia, and incredible athletes and para-athletes from right around the world, when Brisbane hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” he said.

“And after the Games, this area will be repurposed into much need housing.”

Following 2032, the Village will be repurposed into a range of diverse housing including social, affordable, hotel, retirement and market with community, recreation and leisure facilities.

Ms Grace said the renewal project is an exciting opportunity to “literally put more streets on the map at Northshore”.

“Not only will these works support the delivery of the Brisbane Athlete Village, ensuring seamless access and enhanced facilities for athletes, visitors and residents alike, cementing Northshore Brisbane as a vibrant hub of activity and connectivity, creating a lasting legacy of urban revitalisation and economic growth for the city.”

“We’re also very focused on improving the local public transport network in the Northshore area…

“The Northshore Vision outlines a proposed new east-west public transport service to connect Northshore to other major transit infrastructure, including at Bowen Hills,” she said.
