The Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) Foundation has raised $28,800 for Brisbane charity Community Canteen.
Community Canteen is a volunteer-run charity that provides nutritious, fresh and tasty meals to Brisbane’s homeless people, of which there are over 10,000.
BRC Foundation chair Richard Morrison said: “The volunteers, many of them with over ten years of service, do a wonderful job providing thousands of meals each year for people living such a tough existence.”
The BRC Foundation raised the money across two race meetings at Doomben and Eagle Farm in October.
Most of the funds came from a sold-out lunch at Doomben’s Hometurn Restaurant, which was attended by over 100 people and featured a raffle with high quality prizes.
Community Canteen director Mike Andreotti said: “It’s not just the money the Foundation has generated for us. We also have connected with several people offering assistance, especially Darren Wilson of Wilpak who has been extremely generous in providing pork product for our two kitchens.”
Guest speaker at the lunch was Michael Katsidis, a world boxing champion hailing from Toowoomba.
Mr Katsidis spoke about the ups and downs of his life, and how he now desires to help others who are going through a tough time.
