The Brisbane City Council has changed their plans for Stage 5 of the North Brisbane Bikeway and now supports an alignment through Kent Rd rather than Sydney St, in a win for Clayfield residents.
Hamilton Ward Councillor Julia Dixon said: “We want to deliver better bikeways in our suburbs, but this has been a complex matter with varying opinions. I have listened to residents and am supportive, along with the majority of residents, of Kent (Road) as the preferred alignment for the missing bikeway link.”
“Council will now seek funding from the State Government to support progressing stage 5 of the North Brisbane Bikeway,” she said.
The proposed route will complete a missing link between the North Brisbane Bikeway on Dickson St and the Kedron Brook Bikeway at Jackson St.
The previous route would have severely impacted several local businesses on Dickson St.
Residents were disappointed with the council’s approach to consultation when early last year they selected an exclusive ‘community working group’ of 20 people, only six of which were local residents.
Previous planning was conducted through the Active Transport Advisory Committee (ATAC) which took input from cyclist groups.
A petition from 2024 by Clayfield resident John Ford received 613 signatories requesting that council engage with all stakeholders in a sincere manner and go back to the drawing board.
The debate has been ongoing for five years now.
