Brisbane Metro Baseball heads to nationals

The Brisbane Metro team will face off against the best in the country

After claiming gold at the Queensland State Titles, the Brisbane Metro Senior League team is heading to Geelong at the end of May to compete on the national stage.

While baseball is a relatively small sport in Australia, many of our local clubs have seen great growth in the past few years.

Brisbane Metro Baseball is made up of 4 local clubs: Windsor Royals, Pine Hills Lightning, All Stars at Hendra and Carina Red Sox.

The team is packed with talented players, including Lachlan Pawsey and Hunter Ryan, who have been selected to represent Australia in the Under 16s team playing in Atlanta, Georgia later this year.

Coach Nathan Robertson has worked with many of these athletes since they first picked up a glove in Rookie Ball.

“Watching them develop, not just as ballplayers, but as young men, has been incredibly rewarding,” Robertson said.

“They’re a close-knit group who simply love the game. Most of them have been teammates for years, and you can see that connection in the way they play – the trust, the support, the energy they bring to the field.

“We train formally twice a week, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“These kids are constantly putting in extra work on their own – hitting in the cage, throwing in the park, whatever it takes. Their drive and passion for the sport is something special.”

The competition in Geelong is expected to be fierce, with 10 teams from across Australia competing for a spot to play in the Senior League World Series in Easley in South Carolina.

There will be two teams each from WA, NSW, VIC and QLD and one each from SA and ACT.

This is a brilliant opportunity for this group of Under 16 baseball players. However, the cost of sending the squad – along with their coaches and officials – is expected to be in excess of $40,000.

To help cover these costs, the team has rallied support from their local community to put together a HUGE prize pool for a fundraising raffle.

First prize is two tickets to see Lady Gaga at Suncorp Stadium PLUS a $500 travel voucher generously donated by Atlas Travel.

There are many more exciting prizes to be won with 15 in total up for grabs, including a tickets for Broncos V Storm or Dolphins V Cowboys games at Suncorp Stadium, local restaurant vouchers and lots besides!

The team is so grateful for all the donations from local businesses, who have come out in force to support these young athletes on their journey.
