Where else would you find former Wallabies and Reds icons pouring your beer than Brothers Rugby Club, where community is central to their ethos.
Ask first grade men’s coach Ben McCormack who his role model is at the club, and he will struggle to name one.
“There’s a million,” he said.
“You roll up the hill to what we call the Hobbits Bar… and it’s run by old players.
“…They just love bringing their families down on a Saturday afternoon.
“It just provides a great example for our younger guys… that community connection, and your connection to your mates,” he said.
After missing out on a grand final win with 30 seconds left of the game last year, the first grade team will aim to “bring the silverware back to Crosby” this season.
“We want to win again. We’ve built a habit around winning… and there’s a bit of unfinished business there, a lot of us just want to get back there and right the wrong again,” McCormack said.
He said the key to a successful team is building community, making sure the players and their families and friends are connected.
On a technical level, it’s about balance.
“Training needs to be challenging and hard, but it also needs to be fun,” he said.
