Flipside Circus has been a cornerstone of Brisbane’s creative scene for 30 years, growing from a single workshop under a tree in Davies Park, West End, to Queensland’s only purpose-built circus training facility, located in Hamilton.
Now fully reopened after a nine-month displacement due to fire, Flipside is welcoming new students with free trials, and Village Voice readers who mention the publication will receive 10 per cent off their enrolment fees.
“We’re here to empower communities through circus,” Flipside representative Matt McInally said.
“It’s a creative art, but it’s also incredibly physical—there’s something for everyone.”
The organisation offers classes in aerials, acrobatics, juggling, and parent-child sessions for toddlers as young as 18 months.
Flipside’s displacement saw the community rally behind them.
“We operated from a number of temporary venues… our neighbours were our biggest asset. Our community is just fantastic,” Mr McInally said.
The Brisbane Powerhouse, Superordinary, The Shed, and The Pink Flamingo among others all opened their doors, reflecting the strength of Brisbane’s creative network.
“We’re not-for-profit. Our mission is to empower communities through circus, so our classes are incredibly well priced—they’re very, very affordable for the kinds of activities that we’re offering,” Mr McInally said.
Flipside is also a Queensland FairPlay provider, offering government subsidies to help families cover class costs.
With their home restored, Flipside is once again soaring – proving that even after unexpected setbacks, the show must go on.
