Climate action in our community

Solar panels on the Cook building in New Farm

Published April 2025

Cyclone Alfred brought damaging winds, flooding and long power outages—reminding all of us how exposed our local community is to extreme weather. It’s clear that we need to act now to reduce the impacts of climate change and build a more resilient future.

Climate change is already affecting our health and wellbeing, with rising temperatures, more extreme weather, and increased air pollution. Burning fossil fuels—coal, oil and gas—is the main cause. We need to urgently reduce our reliance on these fuels and transition to cleaner, cheaper, renewable energy.

With government support we can act locally. Rooftop solar is now the cheapest source of electricity. With support, more homes, apartments and businesses in our neighbourhood could generate their own clean energy. Battery storage, either at home or shared through community batteries, allows excess solar power to be stored and used at night or during peak demand—reducing bills and reliance on fossil fuels.

Local apartment buildings should not be left behind. The Cook building in New Farm is led the way with a 97-panel rooftop solar system, installed four years ago and delivering cleaner energy at lower cost. With the right support, many more buildings could follow.

The upfront cost of solar and batteries can be a barrier. Government subsidies and loan schemes are key to helping households and apartments make the switch. Local councils and energy providers also have a role to play by identifying suitable sites and leading the rollout of community batteries.

Electric vehicles (EVs) powered by solar energy can further reduce emissions. Some EVs now allow “Vehicle to Home” charging—where the car battery powers your home. With government support, our area could lead Queensland’s first trial of this technology, providing both clean transport and energy resilience.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.  Margaret Mead
