The Save Victoria Park group have organised two upcoming events in the park to raise awareness for the impending decision to build Olympic and Paralympic Stadia in Victoria Park.

Artist and former Brisbane City Council Deputy Lord Mayor David Hinchliffe has often painted in Victoria Park and is aghast at the thought that a stadium might destroy the pristine beauty.

“I’m organising an event, ‘Artists in the Park’, on 27 January when other artists from southeast Queensland will gather here to paint this beautiful place, in case it disappears,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

He said other notable Olympic and Paralympic Games did not build their stadiums in existing parkland.

“London built its Olympic stadium on a brownfield site, it didn’t put it in Hyde Park. Sydney didn’t put its Olympic stadium in The Domain, it put it on a brownfield site,” he said.

“Brisbane would look the dumbest city in the world to spoil a natural place like this with an Olympic stadium.”

Mr Hinchliffe will be donating one of his Victoria Park paintings for auction, with proceeds to go to the Save Victoria Park fund.

Artists for Victoria Park

8am – 12pm, Monday January 27 (public holiday)

Art lovers and observers are invited to Victoria Park / Barrambin to celebrate the beauty of the area through art.

Whether a seasoned artist or a beginner, artists are encouraged to come and draw, paint or sketch Victoria Park in all its glory, and those not creatively inclined are encouraged to come and spectate.

Artist and former Brisbane City Councillor David Hinchliffe will be there to offer advice, inspiration, and encouragement to artists.

Check in at the first BBQ next to the Function Centre.
