Resolutions in a year of big change

Regular readers will know I’m big on New Year’s resolutions, so what was on my top shelf this year?

Pretty much the same as most years, is the answer. Live creatively, be a vessel of change, maintain a positive attitude, reduce swearing, be aware of my footprint on the planet, and eat and drink more thoughtfully.

At a rate of $1 per word in the swear jar, I should be able to buy a tidy share portfolio by December.

My holiday reads were the new book by local treasure, Paul Fairweather, ‘Bold, Brave and a Bit Quirky’, who inspires us with his insights into being courageous.

And, ‘If Anyone Builds It, We Will All Die’, by Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Spares.

I know the title sounds like a Debbie Downer, and most people will shy away from it because of it, but seriously, we must all read this book.

The authors present the argument against Superintelligent AI in the year that history will record as being the year the world accepted AI, 2025.

This book has an urgent message that none of us can ignore.

Awareness is always a big part of my life because it is critical in guiding our decisions.

Kit, who is studying AI as a subject at Edinburgh Uni as part of her UQ Law degree student exchange, recounted to me a fact over the Christmas dinner table that stunned me.

She informed me that the amount of water used by AI last year was greater than the total amount of water used by bottled water companies in that year.

There is much change around us. What will you fill your year with?
