Review: Marvelous provides laughs, shocks, and fun for all (adults)

Lovers of comic book movies, risqué theatre, and everyone in between need look no further to satiate their interests than Bowen Hills.

Following on from a highly-popular run in Perth, Action Reaction Entertainment, spearheaded by director Samwise Holmes, has crash-landed at Twelfth Night Theatre to provide Marvelous: A Risqué Parody, which might be just what you have been missing – a good laugh and a good time.

This strictly adults-only show is a parody of the famous “Marvel Universe”, and while some jokes may be missed without a good knowledge of this cultural phenomenon, do not be deluded, it is certainly a show for everyone over 18.

Highly creative choreography by Emma Wong – aided by some impressive aerial stunts co-ordinated by Alex Mannering (looking at you, Spiderman!) –  puts everyone’s favourite superheroes in some… unexpectedly raunchy scenarios. Varied dance styles such as ballet and hip-hop work in tandem to give each number a unique feeling that keeps the show exciting throughout its 90-minute runtime.

And have I mentioned the homages? With tributes to such classics as Dirty Dancing, Magic Mike, Hamilton, and even Wicked, the small cast of eight pack a mighty punch with numerous visual gags, witty jokes, crass jokes, and shocking moments.

While there may not necessarily be a throughline connecting all segments, the fourth-wall-breaking narrator Deadpool keeps things structured and engaging, or at least as much as can be hoped for in such a production. Who is really here for the story anyways?

Having just added a third week in Brisbane due to high demand, make sure to see Marvelous: A Risque Parody before it leaves on April 4.
