Schrinner weighs in on Teneriffe development

Village Voice has asked Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner to tell the residents what he proposes to do about Kokoda Property’s proposed development of the Riverside Industrial Sands site.

Ben Pritchard, president of the Teneriffe Progress Association, has strongly maintained that this is the last special site in the historical suburb of Teneriffe.

Cr Schrinner said he thinks it’s very clear this proposal won’t proceed in its current form.

“Vicki Howard and I both agree this proposal is a dreadful dog’s breakfast that shouldn’t proceed.”

“The proposed height is totally unacceptable and what I’d like to see is a tiered approach that keeps the scale as low as possible on the Woolstore side.

“That would help ensure what does get built better fits with the look and feel of the local area,” he said.

Cr Schrinner also said the proposed streetscape is “appalling” and “needs to be massively improved” to deliver public realm, greenery and open space for everyone.

Council’s independent planning officers have already told the proponent their plans are unacceptable and they have done likewise with the subsequent response they received about these concerns.

Respected architect and Village Voice columnist Ed Haysom said (in his column on page 20):

“We are told that (this development) will be a catalytic project which will ‘revitalise and reinvigorate an underutilised site within Teneriffe’.”

“What?  Teneriffe is already revitalised.

“This site is only one site that needs transforming, not the whole neighbourhood.”

“We are told that ‘it will be a new iconic riverside lifestyle precinct’.  What could be more iconic than the Woolstores precinct?”

Good question, Ed.
