Snow White a pure delight

I think the apple’s rotten right to the core – the Evil Queen in Ballet Theatre Queensland’s original production of Snow White at QPAC was brat.

In a world where everything is complicated, it was a relief to have a villain we could unreservedly hate. And admire – admire her accomplishment as a dancer, that is.

In the tale of purity against corruption, Snow White shone through like a beacon, along with her forest friends who were given an adorable makeover.

The troupe of dwarves were transformed into pixies, still with their classic character traits which added a lot of colour and fun to the show.

The very smallest of the cast (whose ages ranged from 8 – 17) played fireflies complete with light up wings, which made for some heart melting moments as they flitted around.

But this was no kids’ dance concert – it was a ballet of professional standards and Sophia Gougoulas as the Evil Queen, Ivy Noonan as young Snow White, and Caitlin Volker as adult Snow White were stunning in their ability.

Three guest dancers played the roles of the King, the Prince and the Hunter, seemingly twirling and lifting with captivating ease.

With help from the Voices of Birralee, the Cadenza Chamber Players brought Lucas D. Lynch’s original score to life, while Clare Morehen’s choreography transported us to Snow White’s enchanted forest for the night.
