Every Wednesday from 1 – 3pm, New Farm Park welcomes disadvantaged locals to the Street Soccer Program which offers much more than just a great game on the field.
The program, founded by the Big Issue, supports disadvantaged Australians by giving them a safe and welcoming place where they be part of a team.
Their on-field volunteers are equipped to give personal support and link players to services that address issues including homelessness, substance abuse, family breakdown and mental illness.
A valued member of New Farm Park’s Street Soccer, Coach Paul Branagan has been volunteering with the program since 2008 and shows nothing but devotion to the cause.
Mr Branagan said his commitment to the team is driven by empowering disadvantaged players through sport, where they can find friendships, healthy habits and a better lifestyle.
“This works really well in terms of getting people out and active, getting them healthy,” he said.
Physical and mental health support organisations such as Beyond Blue also have representatives attend the soccer program to provide extra support.
Annually, they organise an on-field match against the Queensland Police Service as an opportunity for the players to interact with the police in a positive way.
The Big Issue runs lots of other programs to support disadvantaged Australians.
