Racing Queensland has been unlawfully providing paid parking at their Albion Park Paceway site for around a decade, Brisbane City Council has confirmed.
The organisation has been using paid parking provider Secure Parking to charge customers who parked at the site, despite not having council approval for providing carparking as required by city planning laws.
A Brisbane City Council spokesperson said the Paceway was issued a show cause notice in March 2023 as they had been unlawfully providing paid parking on the site for around a decade.
However, in February this year they acquired approval.
A spokesperson for Racing Queensland said: “Racing Queensland has received approval from Brisbane City Council on where within the Albion Park precinct its public paid parking can continue to operate.
“Whilst there are no current plans for utilising the north-west section of the car park, we continue to investigate possible options,” they said.
The council spokesperson confirmed the approval for a portion of the site for a parking station.
“As part of the approvals process Racing Queensland withdrew their request for parking in the northern areas, accessed via Greg Chappell Street.”
“The applicant removed this parking area in their application in response to an information request,” the council spokesperson said.
Regarding the northern area, the information request noted that it was unclear whether the surface was to be sealed, that parking bays had “no effective layout”, and there appeared to be “at risk” trees, among other comments.
Racing Queensland did not comment when asked as to whether they would face any consequences or be required to compensate customers who were unlawfully charged for parking.
