Sunsets at Story Bridge

By Duyen Cao

Amateur photographer Nigel Cowdery quickly became an emerging professional when his picture won the Lord Mayer’s 2024 Photographic Awards.

Mr Cowdery said he took up photography as a hobby and was surprised when his photo was selected as first place and awarded the accompanying $5000 by the judging panel.

“I was more interested in entering the competition to showcase Brisbane. I was walking and captured the shadow of the bridge-walkers under Brisbane’s beautiful sunsets,” he said.

“I traded my old camera, which was second-hand, to a new camera. The money was put to good use, and I still have some left over.”

This year the annual photography competition asked entrants to capture ‘Brisbane in its best light’ and highlight the places and people that make Brisbane shine brightly.
